However, while there was joy, there was dreariness at the other, given that a few prominent names announced their retirement from international cricket in the ongoing year. We decided to handpick five players from the list of those who retired this year and Ben Stokes stands fifth on the list.

Here are the five prominent names who announced retirement in 2022:

Much to the stupefaction of the cricket and English fans, Ben Stokes, England’s best allrounder, announced his retirement from the ODI format earlier in July this year. The southpaw cited a hectic schedule as the reason for his decision and claimed that he wanted to concentrate on T20Is and Tests.

The veteran allrounder is known for his match-winning knock in the finals of the 50-over World Cup in 2019 against New Zealand, when he single-handedly took England to a draw, with the Three Lions eventually winning the game in the super over on the basis of boundary count.

Kieron Pollard is one of the big names in international cricket and from West Indies, known for his aggressive stance and never giving up attitude. With over 2700 runs and 55 wickets from 123 ODIs, Pollard was one of the most dangerous batters of the current generation.

Moreover, as far as his T20I records are concerned, the Caribbean allrounder played in 101 T20Is with 1569 runs and 44 wickets to his name. The fiery allrounder was known for his prowess and his ability to hit all over the ground in the shortest format of the game, making him one of the most feared batters of all time.

3) Robin Uthappa (all formats)

Robin Uthappa, who had a fantastic outing with the Chennai franchise in the last 2 years, eventually announced his retirement earlier this year in September. The Indian batter made his debut in the year 2006 and went on to play 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is for the Men in Blue.

To add more, Uthappa gathered 249 runs in the shortest format of the game in the international arena. As far as the ODI records are concerned, in the 46 matches that he played, Uthappa amassed 934 runs at an average of 25 and with 6 fifties to his name.

4) Aaron Finch (ODI)

Aaron Finch is probably one of the best one-day batters to have played for Australia and the former skipper of the Kangaroos gathered 5406 runs in 146 ODIs that he played with 30 fifties and 17 centuries to his name before the veteran announced his retirement from the format in September.

Finch was an ideal captain for the Kangaroos in the One-Day format, given that the batter held an impressive record before a continued poor run forced him to retire from the format. To add more, Finch won 31 matches out of the 55 that he captained and with a win percentage of 56.36.

5) Eoin Morgan (All formats)

England’s former captain Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, when the least expected, earlier in June this year. To add more, Morgan gathered 7701 runs in the ODI format, out of which 6957 runs came for the Three Lions.

Captaining the English team in 126 matches, Morgan went on to win 76 matches, with the win against New Zealand in the finals of the 2019 50-over World Cup being the best moment of his captaining career. Jos Buttler, the wicketkeeper, succeeded him as the captain of the ODI and T20I team post Morgan’s retirement.
