Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has opened up on the reason behind not including players like Babar Azam, Saim Ayub, and Naseem Shah in Pakistan’s ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour, which starts on Wednesday, March 11.

Speaking in the pre-series press conference ahead of the first ODI, Hesson explained that the move was aimed at giving young players a chance to prove their worth ahead of the crucial ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

"I wouldn't say anyone was dropped. We just see this series as an opportunity to give these promising players a chance to prove themselves," Hesson told the reporters.

For the unversed, the national selectors have included six uncapped players in the squad, namely, Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan, and Shamyl Hussain. 

Furthermore, Hesson revealed that the opening batter, Sahibzada Farhan, had rightly earned his spot, especially after his performances in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, where he finished as the leading run-scorer with centuries against Namibia and Sri Lanka. 

"Sahabzada Farhan has forced himself into the ODI squad because of his exceptional performances in T20s, and then young players like Shamyl Hussain or Maaz Sadaqat have been doing well in domestic cricket and junior sides,” Hesson stated.

The first ODI of the three-match series starts on Wednesday, March 11, at the Shere Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Hesson has clarified that the team is looking at this series as a big opportunity for the new players.

"The series will not be easy as Bangladesh have been playing a lot more one-day cricket than us. I see this series as a big opportunity for these new players," Hesson concluded.

"If you look at the previous World Cup in 2024, it had Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both are great players, very difficult to replace them. I think Samson is a combination of Kohli and Rohit, in a sense. When it required a little bit of Kohli, where you just plan and ensure that you don't lose wickets. And then whenever you need to accelerate, in the powerplay, you want to take on the bowlers [like Rohit],” Kumble told ESPNcricinfo.

Indian top-order batter Ishan Kishan, who played a crucial role in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title win, played through the immense grief of a personal tragedy in the grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.

According to a report published in The Times of India, Kishan’s cousin and brother-in-law had passed away in a car accident on Friday, a couple of days before the final. Kishan’s father, Pranav Pandey, has revealed that the batter wanted to join the family, but he couldn’t due to his World Cup duty. 

"Anarth ho gaya. Hum log bahut badi musibat mein hain (Something terrible has happened. We are in a very big problem)," Kishan's father told Times of India ahead of the final.

"We are all in shock. Ishan wanted to visit us, but he couldn't return because of the final. He is absolutely distraught," he further said.

Despite the immense grief, Kishan looked in exceptional touch in the final, scoring an impressive 54-run knock off 25 balls with four fours and as many sixes to keep India on top of the game after losing the toss.

Kishan ended the tournament as the second-leading run-scorer for the Indian team, scoring 317 runs from nine innings at an average of 35.22 and a strike rate of 193.29 with 33 fours and 18 sixes.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has revealed he would love to silence the 1,30,000-crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by lifting the trophy after defeating Team India on Sunday, March 8.

Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav credited the former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for the Indian team’s success after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, stating that Hitman played a pivotal role in improving his leadership skills.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the grand finale against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Surya asserted that he got to learn a lot of things from his predecessor, trying to implement the same things with a few of his thoughts.

“Sir, shoes are mine; I only follow his footsteps. The way, where he left, I got to learn a lot of things from him when I was playing under him. So, I also followed the same strategy, same fundamentals. I played a lot of cricket with Rohit. I know how he worked. So, I tried to implement the same things with a few thoughts of mine as well. And it’s worked really well,” Surya told reporters.

Furthermore, Surya also highlighted his leadership philosophy in the dressing room and team meetings, adding that his motto is to give everyone in the team a lot of freedom to express themselves. 

“They don’t let me talk much in the dressing room. They dictate their own terms. So, I have seen that when they get freedom, they become a different character on the ground. I started to relate to this team after 5-6 months (of captaincy). After that, I understood that there is no point in being a big brother or a father. You have to leave them,” he added.

“There is no point in holding on to them. You have to leave them open. Only then you can get the best from them,” he observed. 

“Every player has different skills and strengths. It’s not that I haven’t said anything to anyone. I have spoken to the players. But those who feel that I have left them, that percentage has increased from the start till now. So, I haven’t said much to anyone,” he concluded.

"If you have 11 players, not everyone will perform on each day. There will be ups and downs and there are others to cover for that person. I have no worries about Varun as he is a World No. 1 bowler, he knows how to raise his game on big occasions and win it for his team, and I am sure he will definitely win the final for us,” he added.

Though Varun Chakravarthy is currently leading the wicket-taking charts with 13 scalps from eight innings at an average of 19.07 with the best figures of 3/7, he failed to create an impact in the last four outings. 

There has been a debate in the Indian cricketing fraternity to bring in the wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for Varun in the playing XI for the much-anticipated final. When asked about the likely changes in the XI, Surya didn’t reveal much.

"Unka (Gambhir) bas chale, toh wo he pad pehen ke aa jaye (If he gets his way, then he would himself come out to bat). He has played in World Cups before and helped the team win. His mantra has always been to take contributions from every player. Cricket is one sport where one or two players cannot help you win the trophy. In every game, all of our players contributed. In the semi-final, that was the case. In a team sport, every batter needs to click for a complete performance," Suryakumar told reporters.

"He has removed the concept of personal milestones. It's a team game, for example, Tilak scored 21 runs in 7 balls, it's almost similar to someone getting a fifty or a century. Both things are equally important to us. These are the things he focuses on. Whatever is important to the team, we do. These things spread positivity within the camp; if you leave yourself aside, then the team benefits because there is a common goal," he added.

My concern is that he either hasn't adjusted yet or is unable to change his approach," Gavaskar told India Today.

"I would like to see Ishan Kishan open the batting with Sanju Samson, with Rinku Singh coming into the side. Rinku has that belief, you've probably seen the 'God's Plan' tattoo on his body, and sometimes things just work out for players like him," Gavaskar added.

Jasprit Bumrah’s childhood coach, Kishore Trivedi, who is also the father of former Rajasthan Royals (RR) and India U19 pacer Siddharth Trivedi, has revealed that the Indian ace pacer wasn’t very serious about the game during his school days.

"Moreover, main bas fielding pe cricket nahi khela (I didn't play cricket just because of my fielding). I played after giving performances. Aap Dada ko thank you boliye (You should be thankful to Dada),” he added.

"Obviously, the dew factor is always a thing here in India this time of year. And whether the chemicals work or whether the dew is going to be a factor, if we do end up having to bat first and bowl second, then we're going to have to adapt as much as possible to that situation. On Thursday, March 5, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) National Selection Committee announced the white-ball squads for the series against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to start on Friday, March 13, in the UAE.

According to reports published on Telecom Asia Sport, a member of the Pakistan contingent in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 was reportedly found misbehaving with a female staff member during the campaign in Sri Lanka.

Notably, the incident reportedly happened before Pakistan’s last Super8 clash against the hosts, Sri Lanka. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was quick to reject the claims with an official statement. 

"The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken serious notice of baseless and fake news aired by ARY News regarding Pakistani left-arm fast bowler Salman Mirza," the board said in a statement. 

"PCB strongly condemns the broadcast of such unverified and misleading information and considers it malicious and irresponsible journalism. The board reserves the right to take appropriate action against those involved in spreading false news,” the statement added.

“The top management of Golden Crown Hotel wanted the matter to be dealt with strongly, but Cheema apologised on behalf of the player and fined him for misbehaviour,” A report from Pakistan media stated.

Interestingly, Pakistan failed to make it to the semi-finals after they couldn’t contain Sri Lanka for 147 or less runs in their 213-run chase in the Super8 clash. Eventually, they returned home in batches on Sunday and Monday.

Reportedly, the player is also likely to appear before the PCB Disciplinary Committee for further hearing. The report said that Pakistani players and backroom staff have a history of misconduct on tours in the recent past.

Former Indian opening batter Virender Sehwag has stated that the English opening batter Jos Buttler is not among the players to watch out for in the India vs England semi-final clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5.

Speaking exclusively to Cricbuzz, Sehwag has asserted that Buttler, who has been under-performing throughout the tournament, will take at least 10-15 balls to settle down before going for his shots, during which he could get out.

It's important to note that Buttler has amassed only 62 runs from seven innings in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at an average of 8.85 with the best score of 26.

"Even if he scores, it is not as if he will score a 35-ball 100. When a batter is not in form, he tends to take 10-15 balls, and then look to hit big, and then he can also get out while doing that. So, I am not afraid of Buttler. There are couple other players that I am afraid of, because if they fire, things might be difficult for us," Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has slammed the former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, who predicted India not to make it to the grand finale of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

Notably, Amir, who started off with a dig at Abhishek Sharma, calling him a slogger, later predicted that India will not make it to the semi-finals. However, the Indian team defeated the West Indies by five wickets to advance to the top four.

"Did Amir really not know that India would reach the semifinals? He also knew it, that the defending champions would make it. But because it will become news, they do all these things. We must not give them importance. There is no need for us to come down to their level and reply," he said on his YouTube channel.

Furthermore, the former Indian batter also strolled down memory lane of Pakistan's defeat against the USA in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 group stage, stating that Amir was the reason behind the result as he ended up conceding many wides during the Super Over.

"The loss that they faced against the USA in 2024, it was the same bowler who was the reason. In that over, there was only one boundary, but too many wides. His ball did not even land on the stumps. Who got scared against that USA team and made his team lose the game, then I do not have to say more," he observed. 

"Why are we focusing on him? The country that is so behind in the sport, they have no players, no solid captain, or a solid bowler, nothing. Just let them be. We don't have to talk about everything they talk about. They cannot come to our level. They have different problems. If we focus on their comments, it is like we are giving them importance, and that is what they want anyway,” he concluded.

South African skipper Aiden Markram has heaped praise on the New Zealand bowlers for putting extra pressure on his batters right from the initial overs of the game with good lines and lengths in the first semi-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, March 4.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after New Zealand cruised to the grand finale with a nine-wicket win over South Africa, Markram felt his batters could’ve adopted a more traditional approach and aimed for 190 runs to tighten the screws.

“I think it comes down to the conditions. They bowled really well up front, quite full. Some balls came on nicely, while others held up a bit on the surface and hit low on the bat, which made scoring difficult. That built pressure, and we ended up losing wickets. The pitch looked pretty good, so maybe we could have adapted quicker with the bat. Perhaps we should have taken a more traditional approach — building the innings and grinding our way to around 180–190, which might have kept us in the game,” said Markram in the post-match presentation.

Furthermore, the skipper also lauded Marco Jansen for his unbeaten half-century (55* off 30 balls), which helped South Africa post a competitive total of 169/8 on a flat batting track. Nevertheless, he asserted it was tough for his bowlers to contain the partnership from Tim Seifert and Finn Allen.

“To be honest, getting to 170 was a really good effort. At the halfway stage, we felt we had a chance. But in T20 cricket, the powerplay is crucial, and they got off to a flying start. You can’t protect every boundary, unfortunately, and once they got going, it became very difficult to pull it back. Credit to Finn Allen and Tim Seifert for their knocks — they took the game away from us early,” he concluded.

Chasing 170 runs, New Zealand openers Tim Seifter (58) and Finn Allen (100*) finished off the game in 12.5 overs with nine wickets in hand.

South African head coach Shukri Conrad termed his team’s nine-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the first semi-final a ‘bloody walloping’. Notably, the Aiden Markram-led side entered the semi-finals on the back of an unbeaten run, but suffered a poor defeat to the Mitchell Santner-led side.

Delving into the details of the game, South Africa was tasked to bat first and in no time, they were reeling at 77/5 in 10 overs, losing their in-form batters. Dewald Brevis (34), Tristan Stubbs (29) and Marco Jansen (55*) played important knocks to take them to a competitive total of 169/8 in 20 overs.

"I don't know if tonight was a choke, I thought it was a bloody walloping," Conrad told reporters.

"If you want to be choked, you might as well have had a snook in the game. Tonight we got a proper snotklap, a South African word meaning a real hiding,” he added.

"I'm so proud of all these guys. I don't think many people gave us much of a chance of even getting to a semi-final when we left the shores. But that's no consolation for anything like that,” he stated.

"We chose a really crappy time to have a bad night," said Conrad.

"There's obviously a lot to be said about playing all those games (in Ahmedabad) and not having played anything in some of the other states. But again, that's no excuse,” he noted.

"They strangled us up front, lost wickets, didn't get any sort of momentum going," said Conrad. "Not a lot of it went right tonight but that was probably enforced because they were so good and they never gave us a sniff,” he concluded.

The chase was more of a one-way traffic with New Zealand openers Tim Seifter (58) and Finn Allen (100*) coming out all guns blazing right from the first ball as they finished off the game in 12.5 overs with nine wickets in hand to advance to the grand finale.

Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel has backed the dashing opening batter Abhishek Sharma, who has been under-performing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, which is currently underway in India.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the second semi-final against England, Morkel asserted that it’s a good learning curve for Sharma and he is just one or two good shots away from finding his lost rhythm. 

"I think just sometimes this game can be hard on you, cruel on you. A similar situation that Sanju found himself in. In your career, you are going to find moments like this. And this is good growth for him, it is good learning for him. For a young sort of guy finding his feet in international cricket, this will only help him down the line in Indian cricket,” Morke said at the pre-match press conference.

Furthermore, Morkel also strolled down memory lane when Abhishek Sharma scored a 135-run knock off 54 balls against England in the fifth T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in February 2025.

"He is not a guy who worries too much about technique. Normally, those sorts of players take a lot more time to get into confidence. So like I said, it is a fresh page for him tomorrow. Opportunity to go and do well. Scored a hundred here against England not too long ago (last year, a score of 135, the highest score by an Indian in T20Is). For him, it is just tapping into those little videos and looking at his feel-good moments and building a blueprint and knowing he is starting on zero tomorrow. It is a new opportunity for him," he concluded.

Notably, Sharma managed to score only 80 runs from six innings at an average of 13.33 and a strike rate of 131.14 with the best score off 55, coming against Zimbabwe.

Former Team India coach and commentator Ravi Shastri has stated that the Indian team management, headed by Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, needs to take a call on the dashing opening batter Abhishek Sharma’s spot in the XI for the much-awaited semi-final against England based on where he is mentally.

Speaking exclusively to the ICC, Shastri went on to add that he would bring Ishan Kishan to open the innings if Abhishek Sharma misses out. Moreover, this would also open a slot for Rinku Singh in the middle order.

For the unversed, Sharma is having a mediocre tournament, managing to score only 95 runs from four innings at an average of 31.66 and a strike rate of 118.75 with a half-century against Zimbabwe.

"Unless the team management realises that, mentally he's not there. If mentally, his mindset has taken a beating, it is for them to judge from the outside, in conversations with him, just seeing the way he is batting in the nets," Ravi Shastri said on the ICC Review.

"If that is the case, then and only then will I think of putting Ishan Kishan up the order and then probably Rinku Singh bringing him, at the bottom. That could be the only change, but I would still persist with him because last time India played England, he had a terrific series against them," Shastri said.

Furthermore, Shastri also strolled down memory lane to the last time Abhishek played England at Wankhede last year, where he scored a 54-ball 135, the highest T20I score by an Indian, which could play a crucial role in the semi-final.

"I would not take that away at the Wankhede. He has done well in the past. He's got some big hundreds there and very quick hundreds. I will persist with him because there is enough firepower in that batting," he concluded.

On Tuesday, March 3, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Secretary, Santosh Menon, announced that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium will host a total of seven matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) season.

He revealed that the iconic venue will host five home matches of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and confirmed that the venue will also host the IPL 2026 final alongside one of the playoff matches in the campaign.

"They (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) have agreed to play five games in Bengaluru, and the playoff will also be played in Bengaluru, and the biggest news is the final of the IPL will also be played in Bengaluru. The fans are going to be entertained at the inaugural function--the date will be shortly announced--followed by the first match, five league games, one play-off game and the final. This is what the BCCI has committed to us and probably they will announce the schedule shortly. The RCB roar is going to echo again in the Chinnaswamy Stadium," said the KSCA secretary.

For the unversed, cricket at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has been halted since June 2025 after 11 people passed away and several were injured in a tragic stampede situation during RCB’s IPL 2025 title celebrations. 

It’s important to note that RCB’s remaining two home matches will be held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The BCCI is all set to announce the IPL 2026 schedule this week. 

"RCB extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of Karnataka, the Karnataka State Cricket Association and the Karnataka Police for their unwavering guidance, cooperation and support in facilitating the hosting of matches in Bengaluru. The collective efforts to ramp up infrastructure and safety measures in time for the IPL season have ensured that the defending champions will play the majority of their home games in their home ground," a statement from RCB stated.

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has cautioned the Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, to be sharp with their fielding and bowling economy since the Wankhede Stadium has smaller dimensions and batting friendly surface.

Notably, this would be the third consecutive time that India would be locking horns with England in a T20 World Cup semi-final after earlier taking on them in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and 2024 semi-finals.

Speaking exclusively to the news agency, ANI, Vengsarkar has reckoned that India would be putting their foot as the favorites, having played the majority of their T20 World Cup 2026 games in India.

"Both teams are in form, England did well in Sri Lanka, and India did well against the West Indies. There will be eyes on everyone, as there is not much time for an individual. They are peaking at the right time. England are playing their first game in India this tournament after so long, that too at Mumbai, so India has an advantage,” Vengsarkar told ANI.

"There is no second chance. If you make a mistake in T20s, you lose. India is in good form. I hope that India does well. I think bowling is very crucial. India has to really bowl well...Bowlers have to be absolutely spot on. The Wankhede ground is smaller, and the pitch is suited to batting. They will have to be economical, and the fielding has to be sharp as well," he concluded.

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Mohsin Naqvi for reportedly imposing a fine of INR 16 Lakh each on all Pakistan players for their early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

For the unversed, according to various reports in the Pakistani media, the PCB is considering imposing a hefty fine on the Pakistan contingent for their poor performance against India in the group stage and for their early exit from the tournament.

Speaking on a local talk show, the former pacer stated that if fines are the only solution, it should be imposed on everyone, including selectors and administrators, instead of forcing players at gunpoint.

"If fines are the solution, apply them to everyone - from selectors to the administration. Players weren't forced at gunpoint. Hold selectors accountable for wrong combinations. Double the fine for them. Stop scapegoating players. This isn't the real solution. Why do players have to suffer all the time?" Amir said on a talk show.

"If you can't pick the right combination, the ones who selected the squad and chalked out the plans must answer. Will you fine Fakhar Zaman as well, who played just two games? What about Sahibzada Farhan?" he questioned. 

"Fines aren't the solution. I've said it from day one - invest in domestic cricket. That is where you will find quality players. If you are angry with someone, don't fine them; drop them and tell them to perform consistently for two years in domestic cricket. The biggest punishment for a player is being left out of the team," he concluded.

Moreover, the same report also mentioned that the PCB has decided not to impose a fine on Fakhar Zaman, Usman Tariq, Salman Mirza, and Sahibzada Farhan. Notably, Farhan emerged as the leading run-scorer of the campaign, accumulating 383 runs from six innings.
