Leading up to the tournament, South Africa was considered to be one of the favourites to win. South Africa had beaten Australia in the bilateral series after losing the first two matches of the series. In the ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa won 7 out of their 9 matches in the group stage and solidified their claims to be one of the favourites to win.
South Africa had lost to only India and Netherlands in the group stage before facing Australia in the semifinal. On the big day at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Australia was on a roll over South Africa. The match was finished within the powerplay overs. In that part, Temba Bavuma was dismissed for a duck by Mitchell Starc in the very first over of the match. It was such a tournament for the South African captain.
Bavuma had a disastrous season with the bat for his team. In 8 innings, Bavuma scored 145 runs at a batting average of just 18.12, at a batting strike rate of 73.60, with a best score of mere 35. The form of Bavuma was one of the main reasons behind the slow starts of South Africa and poor performance overall in the powerplay overs. It did not help Quinton De Kock at the other end many times.

'They did not speak when I played matches with broken fingers and did well for my country' - Temba Bvuma

After the exit of South Africa from the tournament, Bavuma was criticised by many. The former cricketers, fans, and experts questioned his performance in the tournament. Bavuma was trolled on social media by fans on his appearance. But the criticism of his performance was justified. Bavuma finally spoke about the trolls on him on social media.
Bavuma claimed that he does not care about the trolls around him. Bavuma said that people do not know about his commitment to the game. "I do not care about the people shouting on Twitter and Facebook. They did not speak when I played matches with broken fingers and did well for my country," said the South African captain.
