In the absence of senior players such as Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli, young Indian opener, Shubman Gill has been given the chance to showcase his mettle in the ongoing three-match ODI series against West Indies. Gill opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan in the first two concluded ODI matches.

He looked flawless in the first ODI and helped his team get to a great start in the powerplay. Gill scored 64 runs in 53 balls before getting run-out. In the second ODI, he, once again, got off to a brilliant start but was guilty of not converting that into a big score. Gill had scored 43 runs in 48 balls, including 5 fours.

Facing his 49th delivery off Kyle Mayers, he tried to be inventive. The Indian opener went down on one knee and tried to play a scoop, also known as ‘Dilscoop’ but he went for the shot too early. He got it off the cue end of the bat and the ball lobbed back to the bowler only for Mayers to take the simplest of catches.

Given the kind of start he had got, Gill would be disappointed to have played the shot. Nevertheless, he managed to give a decent start to the side and the middle-order capitalized it wonderfully. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson scored respective half-centuries but India found themselves in trouble once both of them went back to the hut.

In pursuit of a 312-run total, India had lost half of their side for 252 runs on the board. West Indies had upper hand and looked to level the series but Axar Patel had other ideas. The left-handed all-rounder played the best knock of his ODI cricket career and helped the team chase down the score with two balls remaining in the end.

He played an unbeaten 64-run knock in just 35 balls, a knock which was laced with 3 fours and 5 sixes. India and West Indies will lock horns with each other in the third ODI on Wednesday at Queen’s Park Oval.
