The first ODI between India and West Indies got underway on Friday at 7:00 pm. The Indian team management gave the much-deserved opportunities to Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson in the absence of senior players. The West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and decided to put India in to bat first.

The Indian openers captain Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill walked out to the middle with hopes of giving a solid start to the team. Dhawan made his intentions clear in the first over itself as he scored back-to-back boundaries against Alzarri Joseph. Gill also didn’t hold back as he started his innings with a beautiful drive through covers which fetched him a boundary off the very first ball of his innings.

Gill continued to play in the attacking fashion as he smashed a boundary, a six and another boundary on three consecutive deliveries in the third over of the innings against Alzarri Joseph. Both the openers expressed themselves and didn’t miss any opportunity to score on the bad deliveries by the West Indian bowlers.

Gill, in particular, brought to the fore one majestic stroke after another from his repertoire as he mesmerized the audience with his brilliant strokeplay. The 22-year-old reminded everyone why is he touted as the finest young talent in the country. Plundering one boundary after another, Gill brought up his maiden ODI fifty off just 36 balls in the 12th over of the innings.

The openers brought up a 100-run partnership between them at the end of 14 overs. The partnership was finally broken by the West Indies in the 18th over of the innings as Gill tried to look for a quick single having played the ball straight to Nicholas Pooran, who quickly picked up the ball at mid-wicket and had a shy at the stumps to run him out.

Gill’s magnificent innings of 64 off just 53 balls with six fours and two sixes had a tragic end but the batter had done a stupendous job of giving a blistering start to the Indian innings.
