One of cricket's most iconic supporters, affectionately known as Uncle Percy, passed away on Monday, October 30 after a prolonged battle with illness. Uncle Percy was renowned for his unwavering support of the Sri Lankan cricket team, accompanying them on numerous cricket tours over the years.

Indelible images of Uncle Percy proudly waving the Sri Lankan national flag at stadiums worldwide are etched in the memories of cricket enthusiasts. Up until 2022, Uncle Percy was a constant presence in the stands during Sri Lanka's international fixtures.

Percy Abeysekera had been grappling with illness for an extended period. In September 2023, Sri Lanka Cricket contributed Rs 5 million to assist with his medical expenses and well-being. During the Asia Cup 2023 in August-September, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian men's cricket team, met Uncle Percy in Sri Lanka as part of the team's campaign in the continental tournament. Since the 1979 World Cup, Percy Abeysekera has been passionately waving the national flag to support the Sri Lankan cricket team. However, due to his illness, he was unable to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup.

Uncle Percy, a beloved Sri Lankan cricket supporter, garnered the attention and admiration of international cricketers. During India's 2015 tour of Sri Lanka, then-captain Virat Kohli invited him to the dressing room, recognizing his popularity among players. In a recent visit, Rohit Sharma, Kohli's successor as India's captain, met Uncle Percy at his home near Colombo Airport.
