Star Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan came out with flying colours in the general elections held in the country on Sunday, January 7. Shakib, who contested from Magura-1 for Awami League, won a parliamentary seat with a landslide victory. However, not long before the news of his success emerged, the 36-year-old found himself in hot water.

The all-format captain of the Bangladesh national team was caught on camera slapping a fan during the election chaos. Shakib is known for his aggressiveness as the cricketing world has witnessed many times on the field. He seems to be in no mood to change his attitude and behaviour even after stepping into the political arena.

The cricketer lost his cool and was seen violently slapping the fan while being surrounded by a large number of people. After the video went viral, the incident led to massive outrage on social media. It is not known exactly when and where the altercation took place, but it is claimed to have happened a week before the election results came out.

According to some media reports, Shakib vented his frustration at one of the polling stations on election day. When he came to cast his vote, a member of the crowd allegedly grabbed him from behind. This drew a heated response from the veteran all-rounder.

As far as the elections are concerned, Shakib registered a massive victory in the general polls boycotted by the opposition. He defeated his closest rival Kazi Rezaul Hossain by a margin of 1,50,000 votes. Magura's chief administrator Abu Naser Beg said, "It was a landslide victory."

Shakib took a temporary leave from cricket to be active in the election campaign. He was last seen in action in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he led the Tigers to an eight-placed finish. Although it was an underwhelming performance from the Asian side, they managed to secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
