Bangladesh got something positive before packing their bags to return home. They were the first team to be eliminated from the 2023 ODI World Cup, but won two crucial points to be in the hunt for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The Tigers defeated Sri Lanka by 4 wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and knocked the latter out of the tournament.

After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to a dismal start as they lost the wicket of Kusal Perera in the very first over. Kusal Mendis' poor run of form, ever since becoming the captain, continued, as he struggled to find runs. Pathum Nissanka made a solid start at the top, while Sadeera Samarawickrama yet again delivered a crucial knock.

With Samarawickrama's wicket and Angelo Mathews' controversial world-record dismissal, Bangladesh gained the upper hand. However, Charith Asalanka played a valiant knock to put his team on top with a sensational hundred. His 108 off 105 balls gave Sri Lanka a respectable score of 279-10 in 49.3 overs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked up three wickets, while Shakib Al Hasan and Shoriful Islam grabbed two each.

In reply, Bangladesh lost both their openers cheaply but Najmul Hossain Shanto and skipper Shakib put on a match-winning partnership for the third wicket. Their 169-run partnership took the game away from Sri Lanka. Just when it looked like the two would complete their respective century, Mathews sent them back in successive overs.

Najmul missed a well-deserved ton by 10 runs. Shakib was dismissed for 82 (65) and got an epic send-off from Mathews as the all-rounder took revenge for denying him the 'spirit of the game' in the first innings. Bangladesh continued to lose wickets from then on, but the Najmul-Shakib partnership had taken them closer to the finish line. Some hand knocks from their lower-middle order helped them chase down the target in 41.1 overs.
