The 2023 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble is set to be staged in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This venue is hosting one of the most prestigious WWE events for the third time since the inception of this event 34 years back in the year 1988.
Speaking of the Royal Rumble, it witnessed some shocking results as the winners of both men’s and women’s contests weren’t the ones fans would’ve expected. The 6’3” Minneapolis wrestling sensation Brock Lesnar ended up winning the Men’s, Royal Rumble.
On the other hand, one of the most dangerous unarmed divas Ronda Rousey made an astonishing comeback to the ring after a gap of three years. She ended up winning the women’s Royal Rumble and confirmed her slot in the biggest event of WWE, WrestleMania.

WWE Royal Rumble Winners & Runners List
The inaugural edition of the Royal Rumble was played at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The event took place on the 24th of January, 1988 having Jim Duggan as the first-ever winner in the history of the Royal Rumble. The next year’s Royal Rumble in 1989 was won by Big John Studd at The Summit in Houston, Texas followed by Hulk Hogan sealing the top spot in 1990 at Orlando Arena.
Hulk Hogan kept his dominance for the second consecutive year and defended his title in 1991 as well. Then emerged the then-great wrestler Ric Flair who won the Royal Rumble of 1992 at Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York.
The list of winners from 1993 to 200 includes the likes of Yokozuna, Lex Luger, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels (two consecutive titles), Stone Cold Steve Austin (two consecutive titles), Mr. McMahon, and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) respectively.
Stone Cold Steve Austin showed his dominance once again and bagged the title of Royal Rumble in 2001, it was also his third Royal Rumble title.

The rise of news stars with the arrival of the 21st century
Subsequently, the arrival of the 21st century also introduced some new names in the WWE universe including Triple H (winner of Royal Rumble 2002) followed by Brock Lesnar (winner of Royal Rumble 2003).
Chris Benoit and Batista were the winners of the Royal Rumble in 2004 and 2005 respectively followed by Rey Mysterio in 2006 at the American Airlines arena in Miami, Florida 2006.
One of the unforgettable names in the history of WWE, The Undertaker won his first Royal Rumble title at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas in 2007. Undertaker’s title was bagged by the modern-day great of wrestling John Cena in 2008.
Since then, the list of Royal Rumble winners from 2008 to 2022 has the names of Randy Orton, Edge, Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus, John Cena (second time), Batista (second time), Roman Reigns, Triple H (second time), Randy Orton (second time), Braun Strawman, Edge, and Brock Lesnar.
So in the 2023 Royal Rumble, defending champion Brock Lesnar will be defending his title against the 30 other wrestlers in the ring.
