Mumbai registered their 3rd win in the Indian T20 League 2022 after beating Chennai by 5 wickets on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With that win, they have also knocked Chennai out of the race for the playoffs. In pursuit of a low score of 97 runs, Mumbai looked like making a mess of it before chasing it down in 14.5 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

Despite scoring a low total, Chennai fought hard with the ball and did their best to make a match out of nothing. Mukesh Chaudhary gave his side the first wicket as he got Ishan Kishan caught behind in the very first over of the innings.

Rohit Sharma then hit a string of boundaries, giving Chennai no chance of coming back into the game. However, once again, he failed to convert the start into a big score. On the 3rd ball of the 4th over, he edged one behind to the keeper after scoring 18 runs in 14 balls. Mukesh Chaudhary then got rid of Daniel Sams and T Stubbs in the very next over to leave Mumbai in trouble at 34 for 4. At the end of the power play, Mumbai were 36 for 4.

However, the Men in Yellow couldn’t pick another wicket in the next six overs. Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen added 53 runs for the 5th wicket to bring the team back into the game. Moeen Ali broke the partnership in the 13th over after picking the wicket of Shoheen (18 off 23), however, the match was done and dusted by then.

The man in form, Tilak Varma, once again, held firm at one end and played right till the end. He carried the team home with an unbeaten knock of 34 runs in 32 balls. Tim David also remained unbeaten on 16 off 7 balls as Mumbai chased down the score inside 15 overs.

Earlier, Chennai were bowled out for just 97 runs in the first innings. The man-in-form, Devon Conway was out leg-before on the second delivery of the game. Daniel Sams had him leg-before, a decision which could have been overturned had DRS was available at that time.

Moeen Ali mistimed his heart-hearted pull only to be caught at mid-wicket in the same over. Jasprit Bumrah then had Robin Uthappa leg-before to leave Chennai in trouble at 5 for 3 in 2 overs.

Gaikwad had the responsibility to rebuild the innings. However, he was caught behind off Daniel Sams on the first ball of the 5th over. Ambati Rayudu was the last man to depart inside the first six overs of the game. He too caught behind off R Meredith as Chennai had lost half of their side for just 32 runs at the end of the power play.

Shivam Dube was looking good at the crease but his 9-ball 10-run stay came to the end in the 8th over. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, however, MS Dhoni was firm at one end. He tried to take the total as far as possible. In the end, he fell short of partners as Chennai were bundled out for just 97 runs. MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on 36 off 33 balls, a knock which was laced with 4 fours and 2 sixes.
