The U19 World Cup was in full flow today with Australia taking on Pakistan in a semi-final. The winner of this match will be facing the Indians in the final. The match didn’t start well for the Pakistan U19 team where they were already reeling at 53-4 and struggling to score runs in the middle. Though the efforts from Azan Awais and Arafat Minhas were commendable and tried to get Pakistan out of trouble however,  they were still all out for 179 in the end. The Australia bowlers were all over the Pakistan batting order and did not make it easy for them at all.

This should have been an easy chase for the Aussies but the Pakistan bowlers had something else to say as they also had the Australian team at 59-4 as well. There was a great partnership between opener Harry Dixon and all-rounder Oliver Peake which kept the Aussie U19 team in the chase. Then came the great second spell from 15-year-old pacer Ali Raza and Arafat Minhas who made sure Their team was still in the game. Unfortunately, all it took was the lower-order cameos from Raf Macmillan and Tom Campbell to get Australia over the line with one wicket to spare.

Tom Straker’s brilliant spell

The performance from Ali Raza was no doubt magnificent, but it was Australia U19 pacer Tom Straker who was the hero of this match. His brilliant spell of 6-24 was enough to put the Pakistan U19 batters under the pump. Straker used his variations and line and length to his advantage. He was by far the best bowler on the day. This was also the best figure for a fast bowler in a U19 playoff as well which was held by Kagiso Rabada. This is a performance that will make every Australian proud to see the 18-year-old just demolish this otherwise great Pakistan batting lineup.

Even though it was Straker who provided the winning platform for the Australian U19 team, we cannot forget the contributions of the other players as well. It was Harry Dixon and Oliver Peake’s innings that gave them a chance when everything seemed to fall apart for the team. Raf Macmillan might not have played a milestone innings, but made a decent contribution with the ball and his 19 runs from 29 balls were crucial since it came at the time when the Aussies were looking down and out. This was still one of the best games we have seen in the tournament that has gone down the wire and has set up a great final between India U19 and Australia U19.
