The dynamic India opener who has been travelling extensively for the past year, approached the team management during the South Africa tour, seeking a break to prioritize his mental well-being. Ishan’s plea received empathetic consideration from the team management. The team management and selectors unanimously agreed to his request, underscoring the importance of prioritizing mental health in professional sports.

According to reports from the Indian Express, the Indian Cricket Board in response to Kishan's request has designated KS Bharat as the replacement wicketkeeper. Since January 3, 2023, Ishan Kishan has been a crucial part of the Indian squad, participating in series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as the 50-over World Cup. Despite delivering impactful performances, Kishan often found himself on the bench, especially during the South Africa tour.

Ishan Kishan has been a constant face in India team throughout 2023

It is to be considered that Ishan has been a part of the tough cricket throughout 2023. Ishan has been involved in the rigorous schedule, comprising the IPL, WTC final, and tours to England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Australia. All these series took a toll on Ishan Kishan's mental and physical health. Along with that, his participation in the Asia Cup and a three-ODI series against Australia added to the strain.

In addition to it, Ishan even faced limited playing opportunities and recognised the impact on his well-being.  The wicketkeeper batter has made a courageous decision to temporarily step back from international cricket. This underscores the growing awareness of mental health in professional sports. Ishan’s prioritization of mental and physical well-being serves as a reminder for athletes to safeguard their health amid success.
