Match number 23 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the dominant South Africa taking on the Bangladesh side. The match turned out to be a late bloomer as Mahmudullah led the fightback for Bangladesh to provide them with some respective total. But in the end, South Africa won the match by 149 runs. With this win, the South African team has now hopped onto second position while the Bangladesh side has now fallen to last position. In addition to this, this loss might also be the end of the campaign for the Bangladesh side.

After winning the toss the skipper, Aiden Markram won the toss and elected field bat first just like what they did against England in their previous encounter at this venue. However, they encountered early setbacks, losing Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen swiftly. Nevertheless, a crucial partnership of 131 runs between Quinton De Kock and Aiden Markram for the third wicket provided a significant boost. South Africa sustained aggressive scoring, accumulating a formidable total of 382, with Quinton de Kock scoring 174 and Heinrich Klaasen contributing 90. Despite their best efforts, Bangladesh struggled to contain the South African batsmen. Hasan Mahmud claimed two wickets, and South Africa established a challenging target. This marked South Africa's second consecutive 300-plus total after scoring 399 in their previous match at the same venue.

Bangladesh last-minute fight frustrated South Africa

In pursuit of the target of 383, Bangladesh encountered early setbacks as opener Tanzid Shakib Hasan was caught by Klassen off Jansen for 12. In the very next ball, they lost Nazmul Shanto for a first-ball duck, thanks to the wicket-keeper and bowler duo. Lizaad Williams claimed his first wicket in the ODI World Cup 2023 by having Shakib Al Hasan caught by Klassen for 1.
