West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, November 23 took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Team India's 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat. India won all their World Cup matches except the final, which Banerjee claimed, because of the "sinners" watching the game.

It hasn't been a week since Australia silenced the nation with a heroic six-wicket win at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Winning all the matches till the semi-final, Rohit Sharma and his team performed brilliantly throughout the tournament. However, when it mattered most, the Men in Blue failed to rise to the occasion, extending their drought to win a major international trophy as a result.

The Bengal Chief Minister added that if the World Cup final was held in Kolkata or Mumbai, India could have won. Her "sinners" remark was directly aimed at Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJ representatives who attended the match live at the stadium on November 19.

“The Indian team played so well that they won all the matches in the World Cup, except the one attended by the sinners," Banerjee was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, without naming anyone.

"If the (Cricket World Cup) final match had been played at Eden Gardens stadium (Kolkata) or Wankhede stadium (Mumbai), we would have won the match," she added.

CM accuses the country's cricket team of being saffronised

Mamata Banerjee was speaking to Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. She accused the BJP of trying to  "saffronise" the Indian cricket team. To justify her statement, Banerjee pointed to India's practice jersey designed in saffron colour. Notably, the saffron colour has been associated with the BJP.

"They are trying to paint the entire country saffron. "They even tried to saffronise the team by introducing saffron practice jerseys. The players resisted, and as a result, they did not have to wear those jerseys during the matches," she said.
