Australia have had a wobbly start to their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, but they now march into the semis with seven consecutive wins. The five-time champions ended the group stage on a high, defeating Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Saturday, November 11. Bangladesh, on the other hand, ended their horror campaign with yet another defeat and put their 2025 Champions Trophy qualification in jeopardy.

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh managed to put up a respectable score of 306/8 in 50 overs. However, Australia never looked in danger while recording their highest successful run chase in World Cup history. It was Mitchell Marsh who led from the front with a blistering century - his second in the tournament. Although Travis Head fell early, David Warner and Marsh were in a mood to destroy the opposition.

They combined for a 120-run stand for the second wicket before Warner was dismissed on the back of dot ball pressure. Steve Smith played his natural game, allowing Marsh to fire at one end. Marsh did not slow down his onslaught after completing the ton but went on to register his highest ODI score. The right-hander was unbeaten on 177 while Smith remained not out on 63 as Australia crossed the target in just 44.4 overs.

Speaking after the game, Player of the Match, Marsh said: "It feels great, obviously to finish off the league games with another win was great for the boys. It was important for me to back myself at 3, knowing when Head comes back, I'll have to go down to 3. Have failed a few times, but have backed myself to perform. I think we're peaking well at the moment and looking forward to the semi-finals in Kolkata."

Earlier for Bangladesh, all of their first seven players contributed their share in crossing the team total of 300. Their openers gave a steady start and then captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy kept the momentum going for the third wicket. Hridoy made a brilliant half-century (74 off 79) while Shanto missed out on a fifty by 5 runs. Aussie spinner Adam Zampa took two wickets and became the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets.
