Shubman Gill potentially saved his place in the Indian Test playing XI by giving a befitting reply to his critics on Day 3 of the India vs England second Test in Visakhapatnam. The under-fire youngster slammed his third Test ton while bailing India out of trouble in the second innings. The resilient knock came when the top order struggled to get going, which should boost his confidence going forward.

Captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a double century in the previous innings, were sent back early by James Anderson. Gill recognised the opportunity and took it upon himself to prove his mettle in the longest format and take India out of trouble. The right-hander played cautiously, especially against the veteran pacer Anderson who has been on fire.

He had suffered a couple of close calls in the start, but eventually found the rhythm and started scoring more quickly. Gill reached the half-century mark in just sixty deliveries. Notably, his last fifty-plus score had come in March 2023, when he hit a century against Australia. Since then, in 12 innings, his highest score has been 34, which came in the first innings of the ongoing Test.

The partnership between Gill and Shreyas Iyer brought India back into the game. However, England spinners managed to get rid of Iyer and Rajat Patidar after Lunch. Gill then took a more composed approach with positive intent and eventually reached the milestone in the 52nd over. The Punjab-born cricketer brought up his 10th international century with a single off Shoaib Bashir's delivery.

His face showed serious relief as he took off his helmet for a modest celebration. He had been facing a streak of low scores in Test cricket, with his career average falling below 30 before this match. Meanwhile, a few overs later, Bashir got his man as the Indian No. 3 failed to connect a reverse sweep properly. A fine knock - 104 off 147 balls [4s-11 6s-2] -  came to an end.

Here's how the fans reacted to Shubman Gill hitting his third Test century:
