On 9 December 2022, Brazil took on Croatia in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. It was the first quarter-final of this tournament that took place in the education City Stadium. Brazil came to this clash after a 4-1 victory over South Korea. On the other hand, Croatia were coming off after defeating Japan in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16.
So, the stage was set for a good battle between these sides. However, all eyes were on Neymar once again as he was on the verge of becoming the highest goalscorer (76) for the Selecao along with the great, Pele (77). So, Brazil fans were hoping for a good performance from Neymar and his men.
Fans were not happy after Brazil lost to Croatia in the penalty shootout
Speaking of the match, Croatia had an early chance in the 13th minute. But, Ivan Perisic’s shot went wide of the left post. Then, in the 20th minute, Vincius Jr. had an effort at the goal. But, Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol blocked that attempt to prevent him from scoring. In the following minute, Neymar tried a shot after cutting into the box. But, Croatia’s goalkeeper, Livakovic saved that attempt with ease. No more significant chances were created as the first half ended 0-0.
In the second half, Brazil started the game with more intensity. In the 55th and 66th minutes, Neymar and Lucas Paqueta had chances to score. But, Livakovic came up with huge saves to prevent Brazil from scoring. Then, both teams failed to break the final third as the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes. But, in the extra time, Neymar finally broke the deadlock with a cool and composed finish in the 105+1’ minute. With that goal, he has now equaled the tally of scoring goals for his country with the great, Pele. However, Croatia did not lose hope as they scored the equalizer in the 117th minute. Then, the game went to the penalty shootout, and there, Croatia managed to defeat the Selecao 4-2. After that loss, fans were in shock as it was another heartbreak moment for them.
