FIFA World Cup, Match 60, Quarter-finals: England's fight goes in vain as France defeat England 2-1

Here is what happened in the fourth quarter-final of the ongoing World Cup between England and France on 11 December

The fourth quarter-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup took place on 11 December 2022. England locked horns with France in Al Bayt Stadium. England crushed Senegal by 3-0 in the Round of 16. On the other hand, defending champions, France won their clash by a margin of 3-1 against Poland.

So the stage was set for an enthralling battle. France came to this tournament as the defending world champions. Hence, fans were hoping for another good performance from Mbappe and his men. Big-name players like Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, and Olivier Giroud were in action in this clash.

Speaking of the match, France started the game with more intensity than England. In the 11th minute, Olivier Giroud came close to opening the scoring with a header. But, England’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford saved it comfortably. However, it was a brilliant ball into the box by Antoine Griezmann. Then, in the 17th minute, Aurelien Tchouameni scored the opener from outside of the box. 

It was a great goal from the young midfielder as his attempt went into the bottom-left corner of the goal and thus, France got a 1-0 lead over the three lions. Griezmann came up with the assist for that goal. After that, England came up with an instant response as in the 26th minute, there was a possible penalty call.  Upamecano came up with a clumsy challenge to Harry Kane. But, VAR denied any such decision after checking. Then, in the 29th minute, Harry Kane had an attempt at the goal. But, France’s goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris denied him with ease and the first half ended 1-0.

In the second half, England started the game with more intensity. In the 47th minute, Jude Bellingham had an outrageous volley which Lloris managed to keep away from his goal. Then, Harry Kane scored the equalizer in the 54th minute through a penalty. After that in the 55th minute, Adrien Rabiot had a shot but, Pickford saved it with ease. Meanwhile, in the 78th minute, Giroud scored the second goal while Griezmann assisted again. But, England got another penalty in the 81st minute. However, Harry Kane missed that opportunity as his attempt went over the bar. However, the match ended 2-1 in favor of France and they qualified for the semi-finals.
