Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 2-1 on Saturday to win their 20th Copa del Rey championship and first since 2014. Rodrygo scored twice, and Vinicius Jr. dazzled. After just two minutes, the Brazilian, Rodrygo Goes, put his team ahead, but Carlo Ancelotti’s team suffered a setback when Lucas Torro drew even 13 minutes into the second half.
However, Rodrygo scored on a loose ball in the 70th minute to give Real a much-needed victory and morale boost following a string of defeats as they get ready to meet Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Tuesday.
Real is currently 14 points behind league leader Barcelona in La Liga after losing two of their previous three games. However, against Osasuna, they could win easily because of Vinicius’ outstanding performance. He was nearly unstoppable down the left channel and played a key role in setting up Rodrygo’s goals with excellent solo runs.
Rodrygo Goes scored both goals for Real Madrid
Vinicius dribbled past several defenders on the left wing before hitting a pinpoint cross with the outside of his boot for Rodrygo to score the first goal. With roughly 65 per cent of the possession, Real had multiple opportunities that Vinicius produced, but his teammates could not take advantage.
After another Vinicius run, Rodrygo missed a clear-cut opportunity to score 30 minutes into the game, and Osasuna nearly scored on the breakthrough Abde. However, a frantic Dani Carvajal was able to clear the ball off the goal line. A little while later, Vinicius came close to scoring with a curling drive from the edge of the box just wide after David Alaba struck the crossbar with a free kick.
On the other hand, Real let up in the second half, allowing Osasuna to tie the score with Torro’s low strike from the edge of the penalty box. However, Toni Kroos’ shot was deflected off a defender and fell at the feet of Rodrygo at the far post after Vinicius’ run and cross found him. Rodrygo then scored the game-winning goal by finishing from close range.
“I’m very happy because I have just won the only title I didn’t have with Real Madrid at only 22 years old. It’s an amazing feeling,” Rodrygo told Movistar Plus. “We were talking this week about how long it has been since Real Madrid have not won this competition, and I, personally, was missing it too. I scored two goals… it was a very special night for me.”
