The day of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham went ended up as a historical one for the Indian contingent. The women’s lawn bowls teams stormed into the finals of the event for the first time in the history of the sport at CWG. Apart from that, the contingent is gaining speed in winning medals during the 22nd edition of the games.

On the other Judokas, Sushila Devi, and Vijay Kumar Yadav won silver and bronze medals in their respective categories. Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur also won the Bronze Medal in the women’s 71 kg category. The men’s hockey team of India went into an interesting draw against England in field hockey.

Hockey

The men’s hockey team under the leadership of Manpreet Singh gave a tough fight to the English team in a Pool B match. The match ended in a draw with a score line of 4-4. Both teams shared the points in the table.

Lawn Bowls

Lovely Chaubey-led Indian women’s teams defeated New Zealand with a score line of 16-13 to reach the final of the event in the Birmingham games.

Weightlifting

Ajay Singh finished in the fourth position in Men’s 81 kg category after lifting a total weight of 319 kg including 143 in snatch and 176 in clean and jerk. Whereas Harjinder Kaur bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg category by lifting 212 kg in her attempts. She lifted 93 kg in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk.

Swimming

Sajan Prakas advanced to the next round in the men’s 100m butterfly heat 6 event. On the other hand, he finished in the eighth position during the semi-final of the same event. Another swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished fifth in the finals of the men’s 50m backstroke event.

Para swimmers, Niranjan Mukundan, and Suyash Narayan Jadhav finished at 7th and 5th spots respectively in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 final.

Squash

Sunayana Sara Kuruvilla defeated Sri Lanka’s Chanithma Srinaly in the quarter-final of women’s singles during the competition.

Joshna Chinappa lost to Canadian player Hollie by 0-3 in the quarter-final of the women’s singles.

Sourav Ghosal won by 3-1 against Scottish squash player Gregg Lobban in the men’s singles quarter-finals.

Boxing

Amit Panghal defeated Vanuatu’s Namri Berri with a score line of 5-0 in the men’s 51 kg round of 16.

Hussam Uddin Mohammed won against Bangladeshi boxer Md Salim Hossain by a difference of 5-0 in the men’s 57 kg round of 16.

Cycling

Triyasha Paul finished in the sixth position during the women’s Keirin first round. Whereas Sushikala Agashe ended in the sixth position in the women’s Keirin first round by a minor difference from her compatriot. Whereas they both failed to qualify further in women’s Keirin first-round repechages heat 3.

Speaking of men’s events, then Ronaldo Laitonjam finished on 12th position in the men’s 1000m time trail finals. Things didn’t go in favor of Meenakshi in the women’s 10 km scratch race final.

Gymnastics

Pranati Nayak finished in the fifth position in the women’s vault final with a final score of 12.699.

Judo

Jasleen Singh Saini IPP defeated Vanuatu’s Maxence Cugola in the men’s 66 kg round of 16. Whereas Suchika Tariyal also won in her event of women’s 57 kg round of 16 with a score line 10s1 – 1s1 against Zamibain judoka Rita Kabinda.

Vijay Yadav won by 10s1 – 0s1 against Winsley Gangaya of Mauritius in the men’s 60 kg round of 16. Suchika Tariyal later lost to Zambian player Christa Deguchi by a score line of 0-11 in the women’s quarter-finals.

Indian judoka Jasleen defeated Nathan Burn of Northern Ireland in the men’s 66 kg quarter-finals with a score line 10s1 – 0s3.

Sushila Devi of India advanced into the quarter-finals after a win of 10s1 – 0s1 in the women’s 48 kg round of 16.

Vijay Kumar Yadav won against Australian judoka Joshua Katz with a score line of 10s1 – 0s1 in the men’s 60 kg quarter-finals.
