On 23 February 2023, India Women’s team took on Australia Women’s team in the semi-final of the 20-20 World Cup in South Africa. The stage was set for the Women in Blue as they were looking to win against the Mighty Aussies. Fans were hoping for a better show from Shafalli Verma and others, especially in the batting department.

Shafali Verma came to this tournament after winning the Under-19 Women’s 20-20 World Cup. She was the skipper also and led team India to the title. However, as an individual, she had a moderate tournament. Shafali scored 172 runs in seven innings, at an average of 24.57 while grabbing four wickets in six innings. So, fans were hoping a better performance from the star batter at the top for the senior team.

Shafali Verma failed to live up to her expectations in the tournament

But, she failed again in the semi-final as she scored only nine runs off six balls, including one boundary. But, a video went viral from the match where Shafali was seen with an aggressive behaviour after taking the catch of Beth Mooney. She missed a sitter at the first attempt at long-on. So, when she finally took the catch in the second attempt, Shafali was pumped up and seemed to use an abusive word to send off the star Australian batter. Speaking of the tournament, she failed to score big and quick runs.

In five matches, she scored 102 runs while failing to grab any wicket with the ball. Speaking of the match, Australia Women batted first and scored 172 runs for four wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Shafali Verma failed to give a good start as she scored just nine runs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored 52 runs off 34 balls and Jemimah Rodrigues scored 43 runs off 24 balls. But, they failed short by just five runs and thus, they got knocked out from the 20-20 Women’s World Cup.
