On 23 May 2023, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL. It was the qualifier one of the tournament that took place at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. In the group stage, GT finished at the top with 20 points in 14 games while CSK finished second with 17 points in 14 games.

Before this clash, both teams faced each other three times in the IPL. On all those occasions, GT came out victorious. So, CSK were looking to open their account while GT were looking to continue their dominance. Speaking of the match, Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bat first.

CSK defeated GT by 15 runs

For CSK, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway came out to open the innings. Both of them gave a good start as their first wicket after putting 87 runs on the board in 10.3 overs. Gaikwad scored 60 runs off 44 balls, including seven fours and one six. Then, Conway scored 40 runs off 34 balls, including four fours. After that, small contributions from Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, and Ravindra Jadeja helped CSK to score 172 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. For GT, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma took two wickets each. Along with them, Darshan Nalkande, Noor Ahmad, and Rashid Khan grabbed one wicket each.

In reply, for GT, in-form Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha came out to bat. But, after 14 overs, CSK bowlers were all over them as they scored only 95 runs for five wickets. Gill scored 42 runs off 38 balls, including four fours and one six. Apart from him, all batters failed miserably, especially in the spin trap of CSK spinners. Finally, GT got bundled out for 157 runs in 20 overs and CSK won the game by 15 runs. Thus, CSK managed to seal their berth in the final of the IPL 2023. Now, GT will play in the qualifier two with the winner of the LSG vs MI clash in the Eliminator.
