Ashes 2023: Jonny Bairstow run-out creates controversy and chaos

Australia won the second Test at Lord's by 43 runs, extending their advantage in the ongoing Ashes 2023. The first Test, which Pat Cummins and his team won after a tough battle on the final day, was more challenging than the second. With the victory, they currently have a 2-0 series lead after five tests. Even though the second Test saw a few heated exchanges, Jonny Bairstow's unusual stumped dismissal received the most media attention. As the Australian team approached and exited the pitch for breaks, the home audience booed them.

When Jonny Bairstow attempted to duck a short delivery from Cameron Green, he was out in the most unusual of ways. The Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey seized the opportunity to remove the bails as Ben Stokes recklessly walked out of his batting crease towards him. The dismissal saw a lot of reaction from the media in England. The English Newspapers came up with hilarious cryptic headlines and now, an Australian Newspaper called ‘The West Australian’ has retaliated with a hilarious illustration that shows Ben Stokes’s face in a baby’s body. The illustration says ‘Cry Babies’ in Bold.

Here's the viral frontpage:

Ben Stokes called for the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ while discussing Bairstow’s dismissal

“My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called ‘over’? Does the square-leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would’ve had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No,” said England skipper Ben Stokes after the game.

His counterpart Pat Cummins also talked at length about the same incident. “You see Jonny does it all the time. He did it on day one to David Warner. He did it in 2019 to Steve . It’s a really common thing for keepers to do if they see about a batter keep leaving their crease. So, Kez , full credit to him. He saw the opportunity. I think Jonny did it a few balls beforehand. Rolled it at the stumps. Jonny left his crease. You leave the rest to the umpires.”
