Former Indian Cricket Board president, Sourav Ganguly's security category has reportedly been upgraded by the West Bengal. On May 16, his 'Y' security expired. Even though there is no official confirmation, a senior official has said that a review was done on the former India skipper's security. As per protocol the security of Ganguly has been upgraded.

The official added that the 'Prince of Kolkata' is currently traveling with the IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals, and will return to Kolkata on May 21. Notably, the team will play their last league game of the ongoing IPL 2023. The 2020 finalists have been knocked out after losing their home game against Punjab Kings.

“As the security cover of the VVIP expired, a review was done as per the protocol and it was decided to raise Ganguly’s security cordon to Z category,” he said.

“Ganguly is currently travelling with his team Delhi Daredevils and will return to Kolkata on May 21. He will start getting Z category security from that very day,” the official said.

Z plus security explainer

Talking about Z security, it is the highest category of security in India. Notably, there are two categories in Z security. One is Z Plus, and the other one is Z. The former is the highest category among all (such as Z Plus, Z, Y, and X). In the Z Plus, a total of 55 personnel including 10 plus NSG commandos + Police Personnel.

Every NSG personnel is an expert in martial arts and unarmed combat. The likes of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, etc avail this level of security. A few years back, former India skipper MS Dhoniused to avail this level of security.
