On 1 March 2023, team India locked horns with Australia in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The match took place in Indore as India won the toss and elected to bat first. Before the match, all fans were wondering whether KL Rahul will get a place in the playing XI or not as Shubman Gill was the frontrunner to replace him.

Since the start of the series, former cricketers like Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev claimed that team India need to drop Rahul by considering Gill as an opener. That will give the team a better balance. However, KL Rahul also failed miserably in two matches as he scored just 38 runs in three innings.

Even, former pacer Venkatesh Prasad also accused the team India of favoring the star batter over others despite such a poor run of form. However, on the eve of the third Test, Rohit said that he will share his final playing XI at the toss as both Shubman Gill and Rahul have been practicing well in net sessions. So, after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma confirmed that Gill has replaced Rahul in the line-up. Hearing such news, fans became happy. But, Gill failed to live up to the expectations as he got out for just 21 runs off 18 balls, including three fours. Meanwhile, all Indian batters looked clueless as they got bundled out for just 109 runs.

Then, Australia scored 197 runs in their first innings and managed a lead of 88 runs. Fans were hoping for a good start from Rohit and Gill. But, again, Shubman Gill failed to deliver as he got out on five runs off 15 balls. He tried to hit Nathan Lyon for a six after coming down the track. But, the ball hit the middle stump as Gill was nowhere near the pitch of the delivery and completely missed it. After that, fans came up and slammed the star young batter on the social media platform.
