The final Test of Ashes 2023 is underway at the Oval, London. While Australia have already retained the Ashes urn for the fourth consecutive time, England would be eyeing to restrict the Aussies from winning their first Test series in England since 2001. Day 1 was packed with action as the visitors bowled out the hosts for 283 runs in their first innings. The men from down under also started their first innings on the opening day cutting England’s lead to 222 runs as they closed the day at 61/1.

On Day 2, Australia found an early breakthrough as Mark Wood found Marnus Labuschagne’s outside edge with a beautiful out-swinger. The balls travelled fast, helped by Wood’s pace and Joe Root at first slip had to react instantly. He did brilliantly stretch his left hand out and the ball stuck to his palm. Root fell on his knees and bounced back quickly in the process but completed a brilliant one-handed catch to end Labuschagne’s stay at the crease. The video of the dismissal has gone viral online and fans have interacted with it in plenty.

Australia are 115/2 at Lunch, Day 2

Australia added 54 runs for the loss of a wicket in the opening session on Day 2 as they moved for lunch at 115/2. David Warner (24 off 52) and Marnus Labuschagne (9 off 82) are the only two wickets to have fallen for the visitors. Usman Khawaja at 47* off 152 and Steve Smith at 13* off 20 are holding both ends for the Aussies. The two wickets have been shared equally by Chris Woakes and Mark Wood.

Earlier, England were dismissed for 283 runs in 54.4 overs with Harry Brook’s 85 off 91, including 11 fours and two sixes saving the hosts from embarrassment. Moeen Ali who contributed 34 off 47 sustained a groin injury while running between the wickets and had to be left out of action on Day 2. England are, therefore, playing without Moeen Ali whose spin has time and again been handy for the home team.
