In what could be big news for New Zealand, Kane Williamson will be part of the 15-man World Cup squad that will play the tournament in India. This is while he is still undergoing treatment for his ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Williamson picked up the injury in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL)

“After injuring his knee playing in the IPL in March, Williamson has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October.” New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said. Williamson is in England where New Zealand are playing 4 T20Is and three ODIs. The T20I series is currently in favour of England 2-1 with one game remaining.

We are delighted to be in a place to select Kane – Gary Stead

Gary Stead the head coach of New Zealand said that Williamson has 14 days time to prove his fitness and the New Zealand skipper has put in the hard yards to make the cut at present. “Through this entire process I have tried to keep an open mind on when I might be able to return to cricket and not get too focused on one date or match,” Willamson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“Being selected doesn’t change that and I know there’s still work to do and day by day goals to tick off to get back on the field with the team.” The Kiwi captain added. The Kiwi squad will be named on September 11 in Auckland.
“Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him,” Stead said. “He’s left no stone unturned in trying to get back to playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him. Stead said.
Williamson played just one game in the IPL 2023 against the Chennai Super Kings where he was hit with injury while attempting to take a catch. He was supposed to play the 2023 seasons for the Gujarat Titans and was picked up for a base price of 2 Crore (INR).
