The Proteas regular skipper has been rested from T20Is and ODIs following his poor form in the recently concluded ODI World Cup. Aiden Markram was named captain in both formats as Bavuma will return to lead the team in red ball cricket. Premier fast-bowler Kagiso Rabada has also been rested for the limited-over series.

"Captain Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada are amongst a group of players that have been omitted for the white-ball leg of the tour in order to play red-ball cricket as emphasis is placed on the Test series for which both will return," CSA said in a statement.

Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen, who were instrumental in South Africa's 2-1 win over India in 2021-22, are part of the Test squad. Notably, youngsters Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, uncapped left-arm pacer Nandre Burger and wicketkeeper David Bedingham have also been selected for the series which is part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
