The 46th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 was played between the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday, May 3. It seems that MI batters are back on track as they have beaten PBKS by 6 wickets and also chased back-to-back 200+ targets in the league.

Talking about the match, MI opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision proved right initially as PBKS lost their first wicket in the second over as the young opener Prabhsimran Singh departed after scoring just 9 runs. Later, skipper Shikhar Dhawan and allrounder Matthew Short took the innings ahead but were scoring at a very slow pace. They got into more trouble when Dhawan was trapped by leggie Piyush Chawla in the 8th over.

Short never showed intent and departed in the 12th over after scoring just 27 runs and that too came in 26 deliveries at a strike rate of 103.85. However, it was Liam Livingstone’s day as he brought the storm in Mohali with some huge sixes and smashed 82 runs off just 42 balls, which included 7 fours and 4 sixes.

He was well supported by Jitesh Sharma as he also scored 49 runs, which came off just 27 deliveries, which included 5 fours and 2 sixes. Both stitched an unbeaten 119-run partnership off just 53 balls and helped PBKS to achieve a monumental total of 214 runs. Chawla was the only player who bowled well as he picked up 2 wickets and conceded only 29 runs in his 4 overs quota.

Brilliant batting performance by Mumbai Indians

Chasing the target, MI suffered a huge blow when they lost skipper Rohit in the very first over as he registered his 15th duck in the cash-rich league. However, the upcoming batters and opener Ishan Kishan made sure that the team successfully chase the target. Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav both smashed brilliant half-centuries and made the chase a lot easier. PBKS bowler had no answer for Suryakumar's 360-degree shots. In the end, Tim David and Tilak Verma did the formalities and finished the match with 7 balls to spare.
