On 9 February 2023, the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy kicked off in Nagpur. India locked horns with Australia and Pat Cummins won the toss. The Aussies decided to bat first while they handed a debut cap to the young off-spinner, Todd Murphy. On the other hand, India gave two debut caps to Suryakumar Yadav and Srika Bharat.
For Australia, David Warner and Usman Khawaja came out to open the innings. But, both of them managed only one run each. Mohammed Siraj took the wicket of Khawaja while Shami grabbed the wicket of Warner. After that, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith steadied the innings.
India defeated Australia by an inning and 132 runs in the first Test
Labuschagne scored 49 runs off 123 balls. Along with him, Steve Smith scored 37 runs off 107 balls and Peter Handscomb scored 31 runs off 84 balls. The Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey also scored 36 runs off 33 balls. Finally, the Aussies got bundled out for just 177 runs in 63.5 overs. For India, Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets while Ashwin grabbed three wickets. In reply, the Men in Blue scored 400 runs in 139.3 overs. Rohit Sharma scored 120 runs off 212 balls, including 15 fours and two sixes. Along with him, Ravindra Jadeja scored 70 runs while Axar Patel scored 84 runs. For the visitors, debutant Todd Murphy took seven wickets for 124 runs in 47 overs.
Thus, the home side managed a lead of 223 runs. But, Australian batters failed miserably in their second innings as they got bundled out for just 91 runs in 32.3 overs. Only Steve Smith remained not out on 25 runs off 51 balls, including two fours and one six. Ravichandran Ashwin took five wickets while Axar Patel took just one. Along with them, both Jadeja and Shami managed to take two wickets each. Thus, India managed to win the match by an inning and 132 runs.
