The Men in Blue locked horns with Australia in the third match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The match took place in Indore as the home side were coming off after winning the first two matches convincingly. But, the main question was whether Shubman Gill gets a chance in place of KL Rahul.

Rahul has failed miserably in the first two matches as he scored just 38 runs in three innings. Many former cricketers like Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev also claimed that Gill should have played instead of Rahul. After the Delhi Test, the team India selectors removed KL Rahul from the vice-captaincy duties. So, fans were hoping that Gill gets a chance in the Indore Test.

Shubman Gill replaced KL Rahul in the playing XI of the Indore Test

Speaking about the form of Shubman Gill, he had some great recent months for team India across all three formats. He scored his maiden Test century in Bangladesh in December 2022. Then, he scored his maiden T20I ton and ODI centuries in the recent home series against Sri Lanka and the Kiwis. So, it was quite surprising that Gill failed to get a place in the playing XI of the first two matches.

However, before the Indore Test, Rohit Sharma said: "As far as Gill and KL both are concerned, that is how they train and practice before any game. Today was an optional training session for the entire group. All 17-18 are in the reckoning. It's not just about Gill and Rahul. But as far as our XI is concerned, we have not finalised it yet. I prefer it to be announced at the toss. Can't count out last-minute injuries and all and we will keep it interesting for you guys as well."

So, after winning the toss, Rohit elected to bat first and said that Shubman Gill has replaced KL Rahul in the playing XI. But, Gill disappointed his fans as he scored just 21 runs off 18 balls, including three fours. Matthew Kuhnemann took his wicket as Steve Smith took the cath at the slips.
