The second day of the Indian T20 League featured a doubleheader on Sunday. The day’s first game saw the first visiting side win at the opposition’s home ground as Rajasthan comprehensively outplayed Hyderabad by 72 runs. While for the second game, Bangalore hosted Mumbai in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Bangalore won the toss and elected to field first bringing Mumbai out to bat first. Opening the batting for Mumbai, openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan could only conjure 11 runs for the opening partnership. Mumbai struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking, but thanks to Tilak Varma's dazzling innings of 84 off 46, the side reached a competitive total of 171 in their quota of 20 overs.
Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis stared in Bangalore’s win
For Bangalore, Karn Sharma remained the pick of the bowlers as he returned with two wickets for 32 runs in his four overs. Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Akash Deep, Harshal Patel and Michael Bracewell returned with one wicket each. Bangalore thus had to chase 172 from 120 balls to maintain Mumbai’s opener curse. Notably, Mumbai has never won an opener in the Indian T20 League since the 2013 season moving into this one.
In reply, Bangalore were off to a fantastic start with openers Virat Kohli and skipper Faf du Plessis adding 148 runs for the opening partnership. du Plessis socred 73 off 43 with five boundaries and six maximums. Virat Kohli finished the job scoring 82 off 49 balls, decorated with six boundaries and five sixes. Glenn Maxwell scored 12 off three, courtesy of two maximums while Dinesh Karthik was dismissed for a three-ball duck. Bangalore won the match by eight wickets.
Next, in the Indian T20 League 2023, Chennai will look to improve from their first game, where they were massively outplayed by the defending champions Gujarat. They'll face Lucknow, led by KL Rahul. Interestingly, they started their ITL campaign with an impressive 50-run win over Delhi on Saturday.
