‘Rana ji ka time aa gaya’ – Fans react as Nitish Rana gets appointed as Stand-in skipper for Kolkata franchise for Indian T20 League 2023

Nitish Rana is currently preparing for the upcoming Indian T20 League 2023. He will be seen in action for the Kolkata franchise. But, ahead of the tournament, the franchise dealt a blow as their skipper, Shreyas Iyer got ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. So, fans were in worry as to which player is going to replace Iyer as the skipper for the next edition.

Meanwhile, there were several reports that Shardul Thakur, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine were the names that were circulating to get the captaincy abilities. But, now the franchise have confirmed that Rana will be the interim skipper for them in the next season.

They also released an official statement that read: “Kolkata franchise today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the Indian T20 League 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the Indian T20 League experience he has had with Kolkata since 2018, will do a great job.” 

“We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” the statement further added. The Kolkata franchise picked up Nitish Rana in the auction in 2018. Since then, he has played 74 matches where he scored 1744 runs. Rana has also picked up seven wickets with the ball. The southpaw batter led his state, Delhi in an edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and he won eight out of 12 matches.
