Despite all the flaws in their red-ball side, the Brits do have some match-winners. These players are seasoned campaigners and could very well go on to lead the English side in the longest format of the game. Today, we shall be taking a look at three players who can replace Joe Root as the next Test captain of England

1) Ben Stokes:

Ben Stokes seems like the ideal candidate to lead England in the longest format of the game. Not only is he experienced, but he also has a sharp cricket brain. Besides, he tends to perform better under pressure.

The all-rounder has made it a habit to step up when the chips are down, which is a true sign of a good leader. An important point to be noted is that under his leadership, England beat Pakistan in the three-match ODI series last year by 2-1. The side consisted of a lot of youngsters. Considering the fact that most of the senior players were unavailability during that series, his captaincy skills were excellent.

2) Jonny Bairstow:

Although Jonny Bairstow is yet to make his captaincy debut for the Three Lions, he could be a superb choice to lead them in the longest format of the game. The keeper-batter's red-ball form has been magnificent of late.

He was one of the few positive for the Poms during the Ashes 2021-22. Besides, he's an experienced player and has played as many as 83 Tests. As he's a gloveman, setting the field becomes much easier for him.

3) Jos Buttler:

When it comes to leadership credentials, Jos Buttler is the most experienced option. He is currently the vice-captain of England's T20I team. However, the main hurdle is his batting form in red-ball cricket.

His below-par returns with the bat during the series against India and Australia meant that he was dropped for the three-match Test series against West Indies. However, as England have seemingly moved on from the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Buttler might be the best choice to lead England as he is an absolute veteran.
