England haven't really been at their best in the longest format of the game of late. Not only did they lose the Ashes 2021-22 by 0-4, but they also lost the three-match Test series to the West Indies as well. Besides, India still leads the five-match Test series against the Brits by 2-1. This has led to the fans and pundits criticizing Root's captaincy.

Despite being amongst the runs, the English batter was constantly blamed for the decisions he took as a leader. However, Root holds the record for winning the most number of games as England's Test captain. Under his leadership, the Poms went on to win 27 Tests.

Root drew light on his decision to step down as England's Test captain. He stated that it was the most "challenging" decision he ever made in his career. He expressed his joy of getting a chance to lead his country for five years.
