'Pat Cummins kept getting bowled in the nets': Shreyas Iyer

Pat Cummins grabbed the headlines on Wednesday as he scripted history during the 14th match of the Indian T20 league 2022 on Wednesday. He went on to equal the record for the fastest fifty in the history of the league. The Australian scored an unbeaten 56 off 15 balls.

This enabled Kolkata to chase their target in just 16 overs. Cummins won the player of the match award for his sensational knock as well. The Shreyas Iyer-led side continues their good form and now have three wins out of their four games.

Due to this, they currently sit at the top of the points table. Iyer was a happy captain during the post-match presentation and he heaped praise on Cummins. However, he stated that the Aussie all-rounder kept getting bowled during the net sessions. He also drew light on Venkatesh Iyer, who played the role of an anchor during their game against Mumbai.

“Extraordinary! I couldn’t believe the way he (Cummins) was striking the ball. Because yesterday when I saw him batting in the nets, he was getting bowled every now and then. I was batting in the nets beside him then. During the timeout, the plan was for Venky to drop anchor and tell Pat to just swing at everything because that’s what he was doing before too.

When I went in to bat, I told him to just time the ball because he was overhitting the ball a bit. We have to take responsibility as top-order batters. All of us have the ability to hit the ball long. In the powerplay in both innings, the pitch was quite the same. After the powerplay, it got a lot easier I guess,” said Shreyas Iyer.

In the meanwhile, Cummins stated that he himself was surprised by his innings. During the post-match presentation, he said that he wasn't trying to overthink it, and simply wanted to swing his bat if it was in his area. The Australian Test skipper was glad that he could start his campaign in such a great fashion.

"I probably think I'm most surprised by that innings. I'm glad that it came off. I was thinking of having a swing if it was in my area. Wasn't trying to overthink it. Very satisfying to do it on my first game this season. Was just trying to pepper the shorter boundary. The hard thing after a big auction is that there are a lot of changes from last year. It's a good mix of talent out there and quite relaxed with the boys," said Pat Cummins.
