The 16th edition of the Indian T20 League is going to begin on 31 March 2023. It will be another season where all franchises will work hard to get qualified for the playoffs. However, Steve Smith is not a part of the tournament this time around. In the 2022 edition, he did not get a team despite being in the auction.

This year, he was not even in the auction. Smith last played in the 2021 edition of the Delhi franchise. But, now, reports have come out that the Aussie batter will be seen as a commentator in the tournament. Smith left his all fans shocked and surprised by sharing a video on 27 March 2023.   

Steve Smith scored 152 runs in eight matches of the Indian T20 League 2021

In that video, Steve Smith said: “Namaste India! I got some exciting news for you. I am joining Indian T20 League 2023. Yes, that’s right. I am joining an exceptional and passionate team in India.” Recently, he made a visit to India for both the ODI and Test series for Australia. However, Smith failed to show his ability as the batter throughout the series. In the Test series, he scored 145 runs in seven innings while scoring 22 runs in the ODI series. But, in Pat Cummins’ absence, he led the team well.

Under his captaincy, Australia won and drew one Test each. They even won the ODI series by 2-1. In his last Indian T20 League season, Steve Smith scored just 152 runs in eight matches, at an average of 25.33. Now, ahead of the tournament, he has come up with a prediction about the four teams who can qualify for the playoffs of the upcoming edition of the tournament. Smith said that Chennai, Gujarat, Lucknow, and Hyderabad are the four franchises that can qualify for the playoffs. So, fans were in shock to see that he did not consider some big teams like Mumbai and Bangalore.
