Babar Azam, the Pakistani captain, was chosen as the ODI cricketer of the year 2022 and the fans, on the other hand, left no stone unturned to wish the right-handed batter on their social media accounts. This is his second consecutive year winning the award and one could understand that the batter is becoming more consistent in the format as days go by.

To add more, in the nine ODIs that he played in 2022, Babar gathered 679 runs at an average of 84.87 with three centuries and five fifties to his name. However, the only area of concern was his strike rate as fans claimed that the batter rather played for personal records than the country. His ODI strike rate in the previous year was around 91 and notably, the talisman has been struggling to improve his strike rate. 

The Men in Green batter is off to a steady start with the bat in 2023 as well as he has gathered 149 runs in the three matches he has played so far, which came against the Kane Williamson-led New Zealand at home. With two fifties in three innings, Babar looks unbelievably consistent with his strike rate (71.29) being the cause of concern yet again.

While the talismanic batter is shining with the bat, his captaincy is taking a hit as his team faced more defeats than victories in 2022. To add more, prior to the 20-20 World Cup 2022, Pakistan lost to England in the seven-match T20I series 3-4 and went on to lose the summit clash against the Three Lions in the multinational tournament. 

Much to the surprise of the fans, Pakistan lost the Test series that followed against Ben Stokes and his men at home 0-3, facing their first-ever whitewash in their own backyard. While many expected to win the series against the Black Caps, with the Tests ending in a draw, the Men in Green lost the ODI series 1-2 and it remains to be seen if the selection committee under the new chief selector Haroon Rasheed would carry on with Babar as the captain of all formats.
