Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of those T20 tournaments in which matches can turn on their heads anytime. There is not much margin of error for batters or bowlers. Meanwhile, apart from great batting performances, the IPL has seen quite a lot of memorable bowling performances over the years. Since 2008, almost every season has witnessed a bowler or two taking a hat-trick in the cash-rich league.
From 2008 to 2014, every season saw a bowler or two taking a hat trick. Only 2015, 2018, and 2020 seasons didn't see a bowler taking a hat trick. During the last 16 seasons, most players have taken only one hat trick. However, there are some who have taken more than one hat trick, in fact, one of them has taken it twice in the same season.
In the inaugural season, two former India bowlers took a hat-trick each. Next year, two legendary players took a hat trick with one of them taking it twice that year. From 2010 to 2012, only one bowler took a hat trick in each season. In seasons 2013 and 2014, two bowlers took a hat trick in each season. In 2016, only one bowler reached the landmark while the next year saw three different bowlers taking a hat trick which is a record.
Five years back, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings made a comeback after a ban of two years, but couldn't witness a bowler taking a hat trick. However, in 2019, two bowlers took a hat trick while the seasons 2021, 2022, and the ongoing season have seen a bowler each taking a hat trick.
