Steve Smith was last active in the Indian T20 League (ITL) for the Delhi franchise back in 2021. Then went unsold in the following auction and decided to keep himself out of the auction for this year's edition of the coveted franchise league. The Australia star batter finally broke the silence over his inactivity in the ITL players' auction.
"I didn't register for the auction, so I'm not eligible to be anyone's replacement in IPL 2023," said Smith ahead of the ITL clash between Kolkata and Punjab. However, players who have not registered for the ITL auction can still be picked as a replacement for unfit players. Matthew Short, for instance, did not register for the auction.
Steve Smith will debut as a commentator in the ITL 2023
The Indian T20 League's broadcaster revealed on Tuesday that Australia's Steve Smith would make his commentary debut in the coveted competition this season. This puts an end to the enigma surrounding his return to the competition. The 16th iteration of the lucrative T20 spectacle kicked off on Friday in Ahmedabad with ten teams and many international players in attendance.
"Steve Smith has joined the expert panel for the marquee tournament. Smith will be making his broadcast debut with Star Sports, adding his invaluable insights and expertise to Star Sports' already impressive roster of panellists," the broadcaster said in a statement.
His return to the tournament was announced by Smith, 33, on Twitter on Monday. In a teaser video, he said: "Namaste, India. I've got some exciting news for you: I'm joining ITL 2023."
He also opened up on captaining MS Dhoni in the ITL. "I guess the calmness that MS shows (was the learning). We saw, throughout his career, how calm he was. He didn't look like he was flustered by any emotions. That certainly something I've taken from him, not just in that season, but just watching him go about his business," Smith said on Star Sports.
