West Indies failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 as the nation endured the lowest point of their cricketing history. The two times champions lost to Scotland by seven wickets bringing curtains on their qualifier campaign. Following their elimination, the side’s star all-rounder Jason Holder opened up his views regarding the current downfall of the West Indies team.

"It's (cricket) not an individual thing or a territorial thing. We've got to come together as a region... and really, really think about how we want to go forward as a group and make it happen," Holder, the all-rounder said during the post-match press conference.  “We knew what was at stake and we still had a chance to qualify. We had a really good opportunity to play Scotland and beat them (but) we didn't do that,” he added.

Jason Holder called for focus at the grassroots levels of Cricket

Holder called it the ‘lowest point’ in the history of West Indies Cricket and called for the need for focus at the grassroots levels. "This is probably one of the lowest points I've had with the team. But, you know, there are still a lot of positives. I was really happy for Nicholas Pooran, the way he played through this entire competition. And, it's good to see some of the younger guys get an opportunity on the big stage.

“It's not a quick fix, it's something we need to spend time on. As I said, development (at the grassroots) is the most important thing, where we can just put things in place and develop our talent. Hopefully, in the next couple of years we can see the fruits of that crop,” said Holder.

Up next, the West Indies Cricket team will be hosting the Indian Team for a multi-format tour, part of which will also take part in the USA. The two teams will compete in two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. The tour kickstarts on July 12 with the first Test which will be both teams’ first shot at the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
