Former Indian Cricket Board chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has reapplied for a position on the All India Selectors Committee, according to reports. Apart from Chetan, Harvinder Singh, a member of the Central Zone selection panel, also has applied for the position again.

It's no secret that Chetan and his panel's recent performance and consistency in selection have been subpar, as the Indian Cricket Board decided not to extend their tenure for another year. Chetan (North Zone), Harvinder (Central Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone), and Debasish Mohanty (East Zone) have served as senior national selectors for the shortest time. Some were appointed in 2020, while others in 2021. A senior national selector is normally appointed for a four-year term that can be extended.

According to IndianExpress, more than 60 people applied for the position, including Chetan and Harvinder. According to the report, the other two members of the previous panel, Joshi and Mohanty, have not reapplied for the positions.

The Indian Cricket Board issued a statement outlining the qualifications for the position. A total of five positions are available, and applicants must have played 7 Tests, 30 First Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First Class matches. The applicant must have retired from cricket at least 5 years ago.

"No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the rules and regulations of BCCI) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of Men’s Selection Committee," the Indian Cricket Board said in its statement.

Role of the Selection Committee

The job domain includes two key points that had never been mentioned in any previous selection committee advertisements: prepare and provide quarterly evaluation reports of respective team performance to the Apex Council and appoint a captain for the team in each format. For the first time, the job description specifies that the chairman must address the media regarding team-related issues.
