MS Dhoni reached Mumbai after the final to have a checkup on his knee injury. Despite that injury, he played the whole tournament. While talking to Cricbuzz, the CSK CEO, Kasi Viswanathan said: "He has gone to meet Dr Padriwal and he is prepared to take the surgery route to recover fully for the next season." During the mid-season of the tournament, CSK coach, Stephen Fleming also said: "He (Dhoni) is nursing a knee injury, which you can see in some of his movements, which is hindering him somewhat. But still what you saw is a great player for us. His fitness has always been very professional."

MS Dhoni was at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai on 31 May. As per the latest developments, he is most likely to go under surgery on 1 June. He is consulting with the same specialist, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala who is treating Rishabh Pant also. Before going to Mumbai, he consulted with CSK and they sent its team physician Dr Madhu Thottappil along with him.

After the final, Dhoni said: “If you circumstantially see, it's the best time to announce the retirement. The easy thing for me to say is thank you and retire. But the hard thing to do is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to hold up. But the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season. The way they've shown their love and emotion, it's something I need to do for them. It's the last part of my career. It started over here and the full house was chanting my name. It was my same thing in Chennai, but it will be good to come back and play whatever I can.”
