On 3 May 2023, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hosted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL at Ekana Cricket Stadium. LSG came to the clash after an 18-run loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). While CSK came to this clash after two back-to-back losses.

Hence, both teams were looking for a win. However, KL Rahul sustained an injury and as a result, he missed this match. Krunal Pandya was the stand-in skipper in the last game and he got the opportunity to lead again. Speaking of the match, Dhoni won the toss and asked LSG to bat first. Due to the wet outfield, the match started after some delay. 

LSG scored 125 runs for seven wickets against CSK in 19.2 overs

After winning the toss, Dhoni said: "The wicket was under cover for a long time, and it looks a bit tacky. We have to see every condition. When you are playing a day game, things change. Deepak Chahar is playing and he comes in place of Akash Singh." However, Pandya said: “I would've liked to bat. I don't know how the wicket will play, despite it being our home ground. KL is a big loss but it creates opportunity for other players. The morale is high. We want to play a good time. Manan Vohra and Karan Sharma come in.”

As KL Rahul was not available, Manan Vohra and Kyle Mayers came out as the new opening pair for LSG. But, CSK spinners were on a roll as LSG were struggling after losing five wickets for 44 runs in 9.4 overs. But, Ayush Badoni played a gritty knock and scored his fifty off just 30 balls. He remained not out on 59* runs off 33 balls before the game got interrupted in 19.2 overs. LSG were 125 runs for seven wickets. Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket while Maheesh Theekshana, Moeen Ali, and Matheeshana Pathirana grabbed two wickets each. Meanwhile, the rain did not stop and as a result, the match got called off. Thus, both CSK and LSG received one point each.
