Mumbai Indians, who have dominated the east Indian team, kicked off the action by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders for the 23rd time. In a convincing victory at home, MI defeated KKR by a margin of five wickets. The Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals played in a rematch of the previous season's final game in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

The toss was won by the visitors, who decided to bowl first. Wriddhiman Saha, the Gujarat Titans' opener, was easily lost, but the team rallied thanks to Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan admirably. For the home team, however, the regular wickets continued to fall. David Miller's final flourish—46 off 30—boosted the team total to a respectable 177/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Sandeep Sharma, who returned with two wickets from his four overs and only 25 runs allowed, was still the bowler of choice for RR. Trent Boult, Adam Zampa, and Yuzvendra Chahal finished the game with one wicket each.

In reply, Rajasthan Royals started off horribly, losing both their openers cheaply. Skipper Sanju Samson (60 off 32) and impact player Devdutt Padikkal (26 off 25) steadied up the innings. In the end, Shimron Hetmyer (56 off 26) pushed Royals beyond the finishing line as they clinched a 3-wicket win. For GT, Mohammad Shami remained the pick of the bowlers with three wickets from four overs while conceding 25 runs. Rashid Khan returned with two wickets, while Hardik Pandya and impact player Noor Ahmad had one scalp apiece.

The infamous Southern Derby will thereafter take place between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League. While CSK is coming off a discouraging three-run loss to Rajasthan Royals at home in the MA Chidambaram, RCB will be upbeat following a strong home performance against the Delhi Capitals.
