The first match of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is going to take palace in Nagpur on 9 February 2023. Both teams India and Australia are eager to kick off the series on a winning note. However, ahead of the series opener, the Nagpur pitch and India’s playing XI are in the headlines. Fans are wondering about the opening partner of Rohit Sharma among KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.

However, regarding that, the former team India skipper, Kapil Dev came up with his views while speaking on Uncut. He said that KL Rahul should get dropped despite being the vice-caption of the Men in Blue. Instead of him, Shubman Gill should open the innings if he gets a chance in the final playing XI.

“I consider him to be a fine batter but if he doesn’t fit in the team, then let it be.” – Kapil Dev on KL Rahul

Kapil Dev said: “Why can’t he be dropped? There should be no such rule. You need to look at team combination, who do we need. There is no necessity. In Indian cricket, I don’t think there is ever a vice-captain. Back in the day, we had a new VC in every Test match. He is a very mature player; I even like him. I consider him to be a fine batter but if he doesn’t fit in the team, then let it be. The team comes first and I guess for that the captain and the management need to take a call. Some players are lucky. Rahul Dravid too played many such matches where he was made to keep wicket.”

Kapil Dev also said that there is no need for Shubman Gill at number five. He said: “There is no point in sending Shubman Gill to number 5. do not feed. If that boy is batting so well in the opening then why to put pressure on him and why to feed him. When you want to play, try to play where his position is. The opening is a great technical position. You can say that there is no difference between No.4 and No.7, but an opener who is an opener. That’s why I feel that if Shubman Gill plays, he should open it.”
