The ODI World Cup 2023 will played in India for the fourth time and Rohit Sharma’s men will be hoping to create history. This is the first time that the Mumbaikar will lead India in an ODI World Cup. Rohit missed the bus in the 2011 World Cup squad as Piyush Chawla was preferred over him. India created history in 2011 and lifted the World Cup after 28 years.

Ahead of the tournament, former India coach Sanjay Bangar picked his predicted World Cup squad ahead of the event. With the usual suspects, if we compare his squad to the Asia Cup, Arshdeep Singh finds a place in the squad. The left-armer did not find a place in the Asia Cup squad. Other than that there was no big change.

Sanjay Bangar has coached two teams in the Indian Premier League

Kuldeep Yadav was the lone spin option in the squad. If we compare Bangar’s squad to the Asia Cup squad that was selected recently, the bowling attack has a left-arm bowling option. When we look at the Asia Cup squad, the Indian bowling is predominantly right-handed. In the Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be India’s main batters in the tournament.

The Indian team have not won a World event since 2013 and it has been ten years since then. The Men in Blue have made it to the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy, and finals of the 2019 World Cup and also they starred in two World Test Championship (WTC) finals. The team could not go the distance on all these occasions.

Bangar served as batting coach under Ravi Shastri for quite some time before he was replaced by Vikram Rathore. Bangar has played for India and also coached in the Indian Premier League for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Recently he was removed by RCB as head coach and replaced by Andy Flower. It remains to be seen whether he will continue coaching in the IPL.
