Rajasthan finished at the number two position on the points table after beating Chennai by 5 wickets on Friday at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. It means that they will now play against Gujarat in the qualifier 1 match on Tuesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sanju Samson and Co. did extremely well to restrict Chennai to just 150 runs in the first innings.
It was a great recovery, keeping in mind that they had reached 75 runs at the end of the power play. However, the Men in Yellow could only manage 75 runs in the next 14 overs. Moeen Ali played a sensational knock of 93 runs in 57 balls for Chennai, an innings that had 13 fours and 3 sixes. However, he lacked support from the other end.
The other batters failed to give him good support and Chennai, thus, could only manage to score 150 runs in the end. For Rajasthan, once again, Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball. He returned with impressive figures of 2 for 26 in 4 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin also gave him great support as he gave little room to the batters to hit sixes with ease. He returned with figures of 1 for 28, while McCoy picked 2 for 20 in 4 overs.
Chasing a 150-run total, Rajasthan lost Jos Buttler early in the second over. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal kept hitting boundaries with ease at the other end. Sanju Samson also looked rusty but Jaiswal’s immaculate ball-striking meant Rajasthan had scored 52 runs at the end of the power play.
However, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, thereafter. The likes of Sanju Samson (15 off 20), Padikkal (3 off 9), and Hetmyer (6 off 7) all failed to hit the straps. It looked like the match had slipped out of the hands of Rajasthan after Jaiswal (59 off 44) got out in the 15th over.
However, Ravichandran Ashwin stayed right till the end and guided the team home in 19.4 overs. He played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 40 runs in just 23 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes.
