Punjab finished their campaign on a winning note after beating Hyderabad by 5 wickets on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With that win, they end at number six on the table but would be disappointed to not have reached the playoffs.
Punjab bowled well in the first innings as Hyderabad managed a reasonable score of 157 runs on the board on a slow pitch at Wankhede Stadium. Priyam Garg, who played a stellar knock in the last game, got out early for 4 off 7 balls. Abhishek Sharma and Tripathi didnβt allow the opposition to pick wickets in a cluster as they added 47 runs for the second wicket.
By the end of 8 overs, Hyderabad had scored 59 runs for the loss of one wicket. However, in the next six overs, Hyderabad lost four wickets, thanks to a superb bowling spell of Harpreet Brar.
The Punjab spinner got rid of Tripathi (20 off 18) in the 9th over, before picking the wicket of Abhishek Sharma (43 off 32) and Markram (21 off 17) in the 11th and 13th over respectively. Markramβs wicket in the 13th over meant Hyderabad were in all sorts of trouble at 96 for 5.
However, Washington Sundar and Romario Shepherd then stitched a 58-run partnership to help the team reach a competitive score of 157 runs at the end of the first innings. Sundar amassed 25 runs in 19 balls, while Shepherd remained unbeaten on 26 off 15 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes.
As for Punjab, Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers. He made great use of the slowness on the surface and ran through Hyderabadβs top order. He returned with bowling figures of 3 for 26 in 4 overs. Nathan Ellis also bowled his heart out and managed to pick 3 for 40 in his four-over spell.
In pursuit of the score, Jonny Bairstow gave them a stellar start. However, he couldn't convert that into a big score. Farooqi had him bowled in the 3rd over to give his team the first breakthrough. Shahrukh khan too looked good for his 10-ball 19 but mistimed one straight to the man to long on off Umran Malik. Mayank Agarwal (1 off 4) batting woes continued but Shikhar Dhawan held firm at one end.
He stitched a 41-run partnership with Liam Livingstone before getting out in the 13th over after scoring a handy knock of 39 off 32 balls. At that stage, Punjab had lost 4 wickets for 112 runs in 12.3 overs. Hyderabad had a glimmer of hope but Liam Livingstone ruined all of that by hitting sixes all around the park. He played an unbeaten knock of 49 runs in 22 balls, helping the team chase down the score in 15.1 overs.
