Debutant, Gujarat created history as they beat Rajasthan by 7 wickets in the final of the Indian T20 League 2022 to win the title in their first ever season on Sunday. Chasing a below-par score of 130 runs in the first innings, Hardik Padnya and Co. didn't get off to a great start.
Both Saha (5 off 7) and Mathew Wade (8 off 10) got out early. Krishna first took the wicket of Saha in the 2nd over. Later, Wade departed in the 5th over to leave the team in trouble at 23 for 2 in 4.3 overs. However, the arrival of Hardik Pandya brought a sense of calm in the middle.
He joined hands with Shubman Gill and the duo put on a 63-run stand with Gill for the 3rd wicket to take the game away from Rajasthan. They did a sensational recovery and didn't allow Rajasthan to pick any wicket till the 14th over. Both complimented each other and took the game out of the hands of Rajasthan.
Yuzvendra Chahal gave the team a glimmer of hope after taking the wicket of Hardik Pandya (34 off 30) in the 14th over. Gill, however, stayed till the end and Rajasthan couldn't pick a single wicket, thereafter. Shubman Gill played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 45 runs in 43 balls, while Miller stayed unbeaten on 32 off just 19 balls. As a result, Gujarat comfortably chased down the score in 8.1 overs.
Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first, Rajasthan compiled 130 runs in the first innings. Rajasthan had scored 44 runs at the end of the power play but had lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 22 off 16 balls. Jos Buttler didn’t look at his best as he looked to anchor the innings.
He added 29 runs for the second wicket with Sanju Samson (14 off 11) before the latter was out off Hardik Pandya in the 9th over of the innings. The Rajasthan skipper, once again, got out after getting a decent start.
Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan made life difficult for the opposition after the power play. Thanks to their sensational spells, Rajasthan could only manage 35 runs from 6th to 12th over. Devdutt Padikkal (2 off 10) also struggled to hit the straps and got out off Rashid Khan on the second last ball of the 12th over.
In the very first next over, Hardik Pandya got rid of Jos Buttler (39 off 35) to leave Rajasthan in deep trouble. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, thereafter as the franchise couldn’t find a savior, who could help the team finish well. For Gujarat, both Hardik Pandya (3 for 17) and Rashid Khan (1 of 18) was brilliant with the bowl.
